Mount Vernon High School is setting a powerful example in implementing the strategies of the Community School Forward model.
Through its diverse and impactful programs, the school has demonstrated a deep commitment to fostering a strong community spirit and equipping students with the skills and support they need for success. In particular, the school’s focus on Work-Based Learning (WBL) and Transition Counseling has been pivotal in aligning with the Essentials for Community School Transformation Framework, developed by the Community Schools Forward project.
- WBL provides students with the chance to utilize their academic and technical skills in real-world situations, improving their ability to find employment and be prepared for their careers. By participating in apprenticeships, work placements, job shadowing, and other activities, students acquire valuable experience and knowledge that will help them succeed in their chosen career paths. These practical experiences not only enhance career awareness but also cultivate a sense of belonging and pride within the school community.
- Transition Counseling complements WBL by providing specific support for 11th and 12th-grade state-assessed special education students as they get ready for life after high school. The counselors work with students, families, and community agencies to identify their strengths, preferences, and interests and set achievable goals related to living, learning, and working. This personalized support helps students transition into adulthood, emphasizing the significance of community involvement and collaboration.
This opening day conference at Mount Vernon High School allowed teachers to participate in a series of activities designed to review and deepen their understanding of what it truly means to be a community school. These collaborative sessions encouraged educators to explore the core principles of community schools, focusing on how they can foster strong partnerships, engage families, and support student success. By the end of the sessions, teachers had not only gained valuable insights but had also developed actionable plans for the further implementation of community school strategies within their own classrooms and school environments.
Additionally, Mount Vernon High School’s commitment to student empowerment is reflected in its partnerships with local businesses and organizations. These collaborations enrich student learning while fostering a dynamic school spirit that celebrates progress, opportunity, and collective achievement.
We are excited about the ongoing growth at Mount Vernon High School and look forward to continuing to support these impactful programs as part of their Community Schools journey.
