Spotlight on Patchogue-Medford School District: Building Stronger Schools and Communities
Topics: Collaborative leadership, shared power and voice; Expanded, enriched learning opportunities; Powerful student and family engagement

The Eastern Region Community Schools Technical Assistance Center (CSTAC) at Fordham University is proud to highlight the inspiring work of the Patchogue-Medford School District and its commitment to advancing the Community Schools Forward Strategy.
Under the leadership of Superintendent Lori Cannetti and Assistant Superintendent Michelle Marrone, the district is embracing innovative approaches to address student needs, strengthen family engagement, and remove barriers to learning. With a diverse student population—50% Hispanic/Latino, 38% Caucasian, English Language Learner at 18% and 7% African American— Patchogue-Medford is creating inclusive practices that reflect and respond to its vibrant community.
The district has identified chronic absenteeism as a critical priority. To meet this challenge through the implementation of the Community Schools Forward Strategy, leaders have expanded the role of their high school attendance officer to include middle schools and are exploring mentoring programs in partnership with the Council on Children and Families’ NYS Mentoring Program. These efforts aim to ensure every student feels supported, connected, and present in their learning environment.
“At Patchogue-Medford, we believe that when families, educators, and community partners work hand-in-hand, we can overcome barriers and create lasting opportunities for our students. The Community Schools Strategy gives us a roadmap to make that vision a reality.” — Superintendent Cannetti
Equally inspiring is the district’s focus on student and family engagement. Initiatives such as hosting family meetings at the public library have created new opportunities for parents—particularly Spanish-speaking families—to participate fully in their children’s education. Having a designated SEL Coordinator underscores Patchogue-Medford’s commitment to student well-being and will play a vital role in advancing the Community Schools Forward Strategy.
“Our district is committed to fostering meaningful engagement—both in and out of the classroom. From innovative family partnerships to social-emotional supports, we are building a culture where every child and family feels valued and empowered.” — Assistant Superintendent Marrone
Looking ahead, the district will deepen its work in advancing the Community Schools Forward Strategy, with Eastern CSTAC providing key support for implementation. Patchogue-Medford’s dedication to equity, engagement, and innovation exemplifies what is possible when schools and communities work together to support the whole child.
Eastern CSTAC is honored to partner with this district as they continue to reimagine student success and family partnerships.
