The NYS CSTAC is pleased to welcome Joseph “Joe” Vereen, Jr. as the new Director for the NYC Region. Joe brings nearly 20 years of experience in youth and community development, including seven years focused on community schools. Most recently, Joe served as the Managing Director of Community Education and Schools at Phipps Neighborhoods in the Bronx, where he supervised five community schools and nine after-school programs for students in Pre-K through 12th grade.

During his tenure, Joe successfully launched two Learning and Enrichment Afterschool Program Supports (LEAPS) grants in 2024, opened a new community school in 2022, and chaired the organization’s Social Emotional Learning Committee. He was also an active member of the Leaders for Integration Committee. Prior to his role as Managing Director, Joe served as the Community School Director at CS 67 The Mohegan School, where he played a key role in reducing chronic absenteeism, increasing parent engagement, and creating innovative initiatives during the COVID-19 pandemic, such as a food distribution program and a virtual summer camp to ensure continued support for vulnerable youth and families.

Before his time at Phipps Neighborhoods, Joe held various roles including Beacon Director at the Flushing YMCA, Cornerstone Director at Neighborhood Initiatives Development Corps (NIDC), Program Director and Manager at SASF (now New York Edge), and OST Facilitator at Ramapo for Children. Joe also served as an officer in the U.S. Navy for seven years before transitioning into youth development.

Outside of work, Joe is an avid baker, reader, traveler, and aspiring cook. He has recently taken up bike riding as part of his healthy living routine. Guided by the Malcolm X quote, “If you don’t know what you stand for, you will fall for anything,” Joe navigates both his personal and professional life with this purpose and conviction.
